Agricola Maraviglia Awarded for Tuscan Blend at World Competition
Agricola Maraviglia from Italy has won a Gold Award at the 2022 NYIOOC World Olive Oil Competition.
Situated in the heart of Tuscany, the family farm earned its second-consecutive recognition for a robust blend of Frantoio, Leccino and Moraiolo olives.
"I'm happy to see that American restaurateurs and consumers are starting to recognize quality and are starting to support truly independent small producers," owner Francesco Piattelli Palmarini said.
"The equation is simple: small batch production is inherently superior in quality," he added. "Large producers can't claim their oil comes from a small patch of trees that grow on the same unique terrain."
Even after achieving success at the world's most prestigious olive oil quality contest, Palmarini said climate change is having a tangible effect on olive growers in Tuscany.
"This year's harvest was a tangible example of how climate change is deeply impacting our environment," he said. "In central and southeast Tuscany, this year's outcome was 80 percent worse than last year."
"All summer without a drop of rain," Palmarini added. "I hope politicians start understanding the value of all that they are destroying by not taking serious and concrete actions."
The NYIOOC World Olive Oil Competition, held each spring in New York, is the world's largest and most prestigious olive oil contest. Its annual listing of award winners is considered the authoritative guide to the year’s best extra virgin olive oils.
