Situated in northern California’s Sacramento Valley, the family company earned two Gold Awards for an organic medium Koroneiki and organic medium Arbequina. Organic Roots also earned a Silver Award for an organic medium Arbosana.
"Our family feels that the NYIOOC is one of the most prestigious awards that Organic Roots Olive Oil can receive," co-owners Nathan, Lukas and Nikkol Polit said. "Being labeled as one of the world's best olive oils is an accomplishment and rewards our family's hard work."
Since 2016, the company has earned seven Gold Awards and five Silver Awards for its three monovarietals.
In the 2021/22 crop year, the company produced more than 236,000 liters of organic extra virgin olive oil using mechanical harvesting methods.
The family said that California's unrelenting drought remains their biggest challenge to consistently producing high-quality olive oil and rice.
"The biggest challenge was Mother Nature supplying very little water to both our organic olive oil and organic rice," they said. "Then we had some early fall cold freezes that would have affected our olive trees had we not harvested them early than normal."
The NYIOOC World Olive Oil Competition, held each spring in New York, is the world's largest and most prestigious olive oil contest. Its annual listing of award winners is considered the authoritative guide to the year’s best extra virgin olive oils.
