Olivadouro Overcomes Climate Challenges to Triumph in NY
Olivadouro from Portugal has won a Silver Award at the 2022 NYIOOC World Olive Oil Competition, the world's most prestigious olive oil quality contest.
This award is the culmination of all the effort we put in during the year. It is a proud moment for us and we are very satisfied.
Cátia Afonso, marketing manager
Situated in Trás-os-Montes, the company earned its first NYIOOC accolade for its Oliv8 Sublime brand, a medium blend of Cobrancosa and Arbequina olives.
"This award is the culmination of all the effort we put in during the year," said Cátia Afonso, the company's marketing manager. "It is a proud moment for us and we are very satisfied."
In the 2021/22 crop year, the company produced 40,000 liters of extra virgin olive oil using traditional methods.
Afonso said that weather conditions throughout the year had posed plenty of challenges for the producer.
One-third of the country is facing a severe drought. This winter, Trás-os-Montes and other parts of northern Portugal received far less rainfall than normal, suggesting 2022 may be another challenging harvest.
