Makaria Terra Wins Gold With Outstanding Koroneiki
Greek producer Makaria Terra has won a Gold Award at the 2021 NYIOOC World Olive Oil Competition, the world's most prestigious olive oil quality contest.

In the 2020/21 crop year, the company produced 10 tons of extra virgin olive oil in Kalamata using traditional methods. Makaria Terra earned the Gold Award for a medium Koroneiki.
"Our award was one of the first ones to appear on the screen and this saved us a lot of anxiety and stress," owner Evgenia Andriopoulou said. "This has been our fourth Gold Award at the NYIOOC and the feeling of being consistently amongst the best is outstanding. "
"It gives us great confidence that we are now holders of the big and small secrets of producing a perfect oil," she added. "It is a big reward for our continuous devotion to absolute quality."
For the producers behind Makaria Terra, the main challenge in 2020 came with a heatwave in May. Otherwise, the season developed as expected and led to an excellent harvest.
"A heatwave in May was the biggest challenge causing problems in the quantities of the yield," Andriopoulou said. "Otherwise, the season developed normally. The usual high temperatures of the summer and dry climate were an ally towards the fight of the olive fly."
"Our November harvest came with ideal temperatures and optimal weather conditions assisting a lot in the production of a superior product for yet another year," she added.
The NYIOOC World Olive Oil Competition, held each spring in New York, is the world's largest and most prestigious olive oil contest. Its annual listing of award winners is considered the authoritative guide to the year’s best extra virgin olive oils.
