Vulcino Wins Gold Award for Outstanding Caninese
Italian producer Vulcino has won a Gold Award at the 2022 NYIOOC World Olive Oil Competition.
I hope this award helps me bring my extra virgin olive oil to the U.S. market so I can share my discovery with my American friends.
Eugénie Kunst, owner
Situated in the capital region of Lazio, the producer earned its premier NYIOOC accolade for its Saecula brand, an organic robust Caninese.
"We are truly delighted," owner Eugénie Kunst said. "Growing up in the United States many years ago, I had no idea that olive oil is good. There was a half-empty bottle sadly sitting in our kitchen in heat and light."
"In Italy, I discovered freshly-pressed olive oil, a cuisine changer," she added. "I hope this award helps me bring my extra virgin olive oil to the U.S. market so I can share my discovery with my American friends.
In the 2021/22 crop year, Vulcino produced 4,000 liters of extra virgin olive oil using traditional methods.
Kunst attributed her success at the world's most prestigious olive oil quality contest to the climate and the fact she plays the music of Mozart to her trees.
"We are lucky because our ancient olive groves live in a sort of magical microclimate between a volcanic lake and the sea, a fertile biodiverse terroir where they are protected," she said. "The only challenge this year was a lack of rain, but that was easily remedied by the water well in our olive grove."
The NYIOOC World Olive Oil Competition, held each spring in New York, is the world's largest and most prestigious olive oil contest. Its annual listing of award winners is considered the authoritative guide to the year’s best extra virgin olive oils.
