The lack of rainfall in 2019 was a challenge for the company's 5,000 non-irrigated olive trees, company owner Gonçalo Rosa da Silva said, when learning of the award.
"Since Angélica Olive Oil is produced from centenary non-irrigated olive trees, we are always very dependent on the weather. The year 2019 in Alentejo province in Portugal was a year of very little rain, so that was our major difficulty. In the end, we had less olives but with an extraordinary quality," Rosa da Silva said.
Rosa da Silva, Lda. won a Gold Award for its Angélica, a medium blend. The company produces extra virgin olive oil in Moura from a blend of olives using traditional methods.
"It is the most important competition in the world. The winners' index is widely viewed as the official guide for this year's best olive oils and for all of us it is a prize for all the work and dedication throughout the year. In the end, to be amongst the best is absolutely encouraging.," Rosa da Silva said.
