Redemption for Ogglio With 2022 NYIOOC Triumph
Ogglio UK has won a Silver Award at the 2022 NYIOOC World Olive Oil Competition for its medium Nocellera del Belice.
After we weren't selected last year, we’ve been working hard to improve our oil: it's great when your efforts are recognized. When you’ve got passion, and commitment the sky is the limit.
Giuseppe Trapani, managing director
The two-year-old company produces its extra virgin olive oil in Sicily, Italy, using traditional methods before selling it in the United Kingdom. Giuseppe Trapani, the managing director, said failing to win at last year's competition makes this award even better.
"After we weren't selected last year, we’ve been working hard to improve our oil," he said. "It's great when your efforts are recognized. When you’ve got passion, and commitment the sky is the limit."
"We only started our company in 2020 and hope that winning at the NYIOOC will help us enter the U.S. market soon," Trapani added.
Despite their success at this year's edition of the world's largest olive oil quality competition, Trapani said the company had to overcome plenty of hurdles.
"Very rainy weather caused floods, washed away soil and destroyed many roads," he said.
"It also was harder to take our olive oil from Italy to the U.K., where we are based, because of Brexit, with new rules and import duties to pay," Trapani added. "Shipping costs almost doubled compared to the previous year and Covid-19 led to a lack of workers to pick the olives."
The NYIOOC World Olive Oil Competition, held each spring in New York, is the world's largest and most prestigious olive oil contest. Its annual listing of award winners is considered the authoritative guide to the year’s best extra virgin olive oils.
