Based in Sitia Lasithiou Kritis, Crete, Eleones Zakros earned a Silver Award for its medium Koroneiki at the 2022 NYIOOC World Olive Oil Competition.
"We are honored to have taken part in such a prestigious competition and are very proud that our olive oil has been distinguished as one of the best," owner Dimitris Trikilis said. "We hope that this will help us achieve our goal of entering the U.S. market."
In the 2021/22 crop year, the company produced between 5,000 and 8,000 liters of extra virgin olive oil using traditional methods.
"The problem this year was that it was very difficult to find workers for the harvest," Trikilis said.
The NYIOOC World Olive Oil Competition, held each spring in New York, is the world's largest and most prestigious olive oil contest. Its annual listing of award winners is considered the authoritative guide to the year’s best extra virgin olive oils.
