Mourello Awarded for ‘Vedema’ Koroneiki at 2022 NYIOOC
Mourello from Greece has won a Gold Award at the 2022 NYIOOC World Olive Oil Competition, the world's most prestigious olive oil quality contest.
We make great efforts to have this result. This confident victory will open new horizons to us.
Mixalis Tvlas, CEO
Located on the island of Crete, the producer earned its first-ever NYIOOC award for its Vedema brand, an organic delicate Koroneiki.
"This confident victory will open new horizons to us," said Mixalis Tvlas, the company's chief executive. "We started with the American market and this will probably be good for our business and the final consumer."
In the 2021/22 crop year, the company produced 20,000 liters of organic extra virgin olive oil using traditional methods.
Despite this year's success, Tvlas said the company had to overcome plenty of challenges throughout the harvest.
"In eastern Crete, our biggest problem during the flowering period is the intense south winds," he said. "We make great efforts to have this result."
The NYIOOC World Olive Oil Competition, held each spring in New York, is the world's largest and most prestigious olive oil contest. Its annual listing of award winners is considered the authoritative guide to the year’s best extra virgin olive oils.
