Hacienda de Colchado Win Gold in World Competition
Spanish producer Hacienda de Colchado has won two Gold Awards at the 2020 NYIOOC World Olive Oil Competition.
I feel satisfaction and gratitude to all those who have made it possible to win this award. For us, it reflects our work and efforts during the year. It is like an international seal of quality for our olive oils.
Perfecto Matas, CEO
The Andalusian producer earned the coveted awards for two medium-intensity Hojiblanca monovarietals under the Legado and Experience labels.
"I feel satisfaction and gratitude to all those who have made it possible to win this award," CEO Perfecto Matas said. "For us, it reflects our work and efforts during the year."
"Seeing an international jury of great prestige choosing our oil as the best among thousands of good oils is really exciting," he added. "It is like an international seal of quality for our olive oils."
Matas admitted that this year's success did not come without its fair share of challenges, citing erratic weather throughout the season as one of the main hurdles his team had to overcome.
"It has been a complicated year for the production of green oils," he said. "This season, we were surprised by the rain when the olives were at their optimum point of ripeness, followed by days of strong sunshine."
"This made the olives ripen faster, so we had to speed up the harvesting with more staff to avoid obtaining ripe oils," Matas added.
The NYIOOC World Olive Oil Competition, held each spring in New York, is the world's largest and most prestigious olive oil contest and its annual listing of award winners is considered the authoritative guide to the year’s best extra virgin olive oils.
