Durant Olive Mill Adds to NYIOOC Win Streak

3 years agoBy OOT Staff

Durant Olive Mill from the United States has won three Gold Awards and one Silver Award at the 2021 NYIOOC World Olive Oil Competition, the world's most prestigious olive oil quality contest.

We're honored our extra virgin olive oil has been awarded at this year's NYIOOC. It's really meaningful to be named a top producer. We feel fortunate to provide land stewardship in the place we call home, where we can grow, cultivate and mill our olives.

Paul Durant, owner

In the 2020/21 crop year, the company produced 12,000 liters of extra virgin olive oil in Oregon from Frantoio, Koroneiki and Mission olives using traditional methods.

"We're honored our extra virgin olive oil has been awarded at this year's NYIOOC," owner Paul Durant said. "It's really meaningful to be named a top producer. We feel fortunate to provide land stewardship in the place we call home, where we can grow, cultivate and mill our olives."

Durant Olive Mill won the three Gold Awards for its medium Frantoio and Mission monovarietals and its medium Estate Blend. The Oregonian producer also earned a Silver Award for its medium Koroneiki monovarietal.

This year's haul of four awards brings Durant Olive Mill's total to 16 at the NYIOOC and ties last year's record of two Gold and two Silver Awards.

Despite the success, Durant said the 2020/21 harvest was the toughest one he's faced yet after record-setting wildfires scorched the region.

"Here in Oregon, the 2020 harvest was most challenging due to wildfires hitting our region hard in September," he said. "We weren't sure how the smoke would affect our trees, or how near the fires might encroach on our community, our farm and our mill."

The NYIOOC World Olive Oil Competition, held each spring in New York, is the world's largest and most prestigious olive oil contest. Its annual listing of award winners is considered the authoritative guide to the year’s best extra virgin olive oils.
