Nina’s Olivar Awarded for Organic Blend

3 years agoBy OOT Staff

Spanish producer Nina's Olivar has won a Silver Award at the 2021 NYIOOC World Olive Oil Competition, the world's most prestigious olive oil quality contest.

This recognition from the NYIOOC is truly an honor for a small-batch producer like me. This speaks to the emotion and passion involved in farming, being kind to the trees that for centuries have been known only to give and take so little. My company gets put on the map of quality-conscious producers with this award.

Nina Khanna, owner

In the 2020/21 crop year, the company produced 800 liters of organic extra virgin olive oil in Andalusia from Arbequina and Manzanilla olives using traditional methods.

"This recognition from the NYIOOC is truly an honor for a small-batch producer like me," owner Nina Khanna said. "This speaks to the emotion and passion involved in farming, being kind to the trees that for centuries have been known only to give and take so little. My company gets put on the map of quality-conscious producers with this award."

Nina's Olivar LLC earned the Silver Award for its organic delicate blend, which has won a total of three awards since 2019, including a Gold in 2020.

Khanna said that the award comes after a challenging year, with the Covid-19 pandemic creating all kinds of logistical issues for the company.

"The 2020/21 season was marked with a lot of challenges," she said. "Planned farm work could not happen as people slated to come to work at that time were not comfortable to come out with Covid-19 looming."

"All planned farm work was either delayed or not performed," Khanna added. "Getting the water guy to come to deliver the water during the hot season was our greatest success."

The NYIOOC World Olive Oil Competition, held each spring in New York, is the world's largest and most prestigious olive oil contest. Its annual listing of award winners is considered the authoritative guide to the year’s best extra virgin olive oils.
