Almazaras de la Subbética Triumphs in New York
Spanish cooperative Almazaras de la Subbética has won four awards at the 2023 NYIOOC World Olive Oil Competition, the world's largest olive oil quality contest.
For Almazaras de la Subbética, it is a pleasure and a moment of pride to win these international awards in this difficult year with our four oils.
Francisco Serrano, president
The Andalusian producer earned three Gold Awards for its Rincon de la Subbetica brand, an organic medium Hojiblanca; its Parqueoliva Serie Oro brand, a medium blend; and its Almaoliva Bio, an organic medium blend. They also won a Silver Award for its delicate Almaoliva Arbequina brand.
"For Almazaras de la Subbética, it is a pleasure and a moment of pride to win these international awards in this difficult year with our four oils," cooperative president Francisco Serrano said.
Almazaras de la Subbética has been a serial winner at the NYIOOC, with its four brands combining to earn 23 awards since 2017.
For the 8,000-member cooperative, these awards are even more meaningful after the historically-low harvest endured by Spanish and Andalusian producers in the 2022/23 crop year.
"This year has been a very bad harvest," Serrano said. "We produced 45 percent of what we did last year due to the drought."
"We hope it rains for the next campaign, although it is already three months behind without rain," he added. "Otherwise, we will also have a very short production campaign again."
Held each spring in New York, the NYIOOC World Olive Oil Competition is the world's largest and most prestigious olive oil contest. Its annual listing of award winners is considered the authoritative guide to the year’s best extra virgin olive oils.
