Based in Monti Iblei, Sicily, the company earned a Gold Award at the 2023 NYIOOC World Olive Oil Competition for its Agrestis Fiore d'Oro PDO, a medium Tonda Iblea.
"We are really happy to be awarded at the NYIOOC," owner Pietro Nicotra said. "This helps us to stand out during these bad times and know that all the hard work is paid back with such a big positive result. We are proud."
In the 2022/23 crop year, the company produced 40,000 liters of extra virgin olive oil. Nicotra cited rising production costs as his most significant challenge in producing his award-winning product.
"This year was difficult due to the increase in costs for electricity and fuel and the unavailability of products needed for everyday business like bottles and cardboard," he said. "Apart from this, nature gifted us with good and high qualitative extra virgin olive oil and good weather during the harvest."
Held each spring in New York, the NYIOOC World Olive Oil Competition is the world's most prestigious olive oil contest. Its annual listing of award winners is considered the authoritative guide to the year’s best extra virgin olive oils.
