Tèra de Prie Awarded for Organic Taggiasca

a year agoBy OOT Staff

Tèra de Prie from Italy has returned to winning ways at the 2023 NYIOOC World Olive Oil Competition, the world's largest olive oil quality contest.

We're happy and surprised as we had a very difficult year. We did our best. Nature wasn't merciful but we're still happy with the result.

Nicola Ferrarese, owner

The Ligurian producer earned a Silver Award for an organic medium Taggiasca, also awarded in 2021.

"We're happy and surprised as we had a very difficult year," owner Nicola Ferrarese said. "We did our best. Nature wasn't merciful, but we're still happy with the result."

In the 2022/23 crop year, Tèra de Prie produced 1,400 liters of extra virgin olive oil using traditional methods. Ferrarese said his inability to rely on irrigation made facing Italy's drought a far more significant challenge.

"We faced a heavy drought that reduced the production and added a little more bitterness," he said. "As we're a Slow Food Praesidium, we cannot rely on artificial irrigation."

Held each spring in New York, the NYIOOC World Olive Oil Competition is the world's most prestigious olive oil contest. Its annual listing of award winners is considered the authoritative guide to the year’s best extra virgin olive oils.

The complete list of winners can be viewed in the Official Guide to the World's Best Olive Oils.
