Rastrello wins 2 awards at 2022 NYIOOC

3 years agoBy OOT Staff

Rastrello from Italy has won Gold and Silver awards at the 2022 NYIOOC World Olive Oil Competition, the world's most prestigious olive oil quality contest.

The company produces organic extra virgin olive oil in Umbria (Italy) using traditional harvesting methods.

The 2021/2022 season was marked by significant challenges, the company's owner, Christiane Wassmann, said after receiving news of the award.

"The main challenge was our late and short spring," Wassmann said. "The heat came on too strong; and, that combined with little rain, made the buds fall quickly and therefore lost up to half of our production."

"The other biggest challenge this year was shipping to the United States. It was more expensive and took four times longer than previous years," she added.

Rastrello won a Gold Award for its Rastrello Single Family, an organic medium-intensity blend and a Silver Award for its delicate Rastrello Heritage Blend.

"We are filled with gratitude that our hard work has paid off," Wassmann said upon winning the olive oil industry's most coveted award for quality. "We continue to try and learn how to continue with the best practices possible and always strive for making the highest quality EVOO. Having this recognition makes us feel confident that we are moving in the right direction."

The NYIOOC World Olive Oil Competition, held each spring in New York, is the world's largest and most prestigious olive oil contest and its annual listing of award winners is considered the authoritative guide to the year’s best extra virgin olive oils.
