Papal State Producer Casa Oilio Sperlonga Celebrates Win in New York
Casa Oilio Sperlonga from Italy has won an award at the 2023 NYIOOC World Olive Oil Competition, the world's largest olive oil quality contest.
The Lazio-based producer earned a Silver Award for its L'Olio dei Papi brand, a medium blend. The company was previously awarded at the competition in 2018 and 2019.
"I consider it a good reward for our hard work," chief executive Domenico Sperlonga said.
Sperlonga, one of the official suppliers of extra virgin olive oil to the Vatican, said the previous harvest came with plenty of challenges, as it did for many other Italian producers.
"Surely, the scarce availability of good olives has affected our work, but we tried to manage at best," he said.
The NYIOOC World Olive Oil Competition held each spring in New York, is the world's most prestigious olive oil contest. Its annual listing of award winners is considered the authoritative guide to the year’s best extra virgin olive oils.
