Pago de los Baldíos de San Carlos Awarded at 2020 NYIOOC

4 years agoBy OOT Staff

Spanish producer Pago de los Baldíos de San Carlos has won a Silver Award at the 2020 NYIOOC World Olive Oil Competition for a medium-intensity Arbequina.

For us, it has been hard work year-after-year to give our customers the best extra virgin olive oil that we can produce, taking care of each of olive trees and all the traceability processes along the way. The NYIOOC recognizes the quality of the best extra virgin olive oils around the world and we are very proud and happy to be part of it.

Ana Sánchez, owner

In the 2019/20 crop year, the Extremadura-based company produced 90,000 liters of extra virgin olive oil using traditional methods.

"For us, it has been hard work year-after-year to give our customers the best extra virgin olive oil that we can produce, taking care of each of olive trees and all the traceability processes along the way," owner Ana Sánchez said.

"The NYIOOC recognizes the quality of the best extra virgin olive oils around the world and we are very proud and happy to be part of it," she added.

In spite of the company's success at this year's edition of the competition, Sánchez said that producers in Extremadura faced a number of challenges in 2019.

"Scant rains and excessive cold – climate change is affecting the ecosystem we have and it costs us a lot to be able to keep each one of the olive groves in optimum condition," she said. "It requires much more dedication, effort and time."

The NYIOOC World Olive Oil Competition, held each spring in New York, is the world's largest and most prestigious olive oil contest and its annual listing of award winners is considered the authoritative guide to the year’s best extra virgin olive oils.
