Liokareas ‘Extremely Honored’ by Repeat Win

4 years agoBy OOT Staff

Liokareas Olive Oil, from Greece, has won a Silver Award for its early-harvest medium-intensity Koroneiki at the 2020 NYIOOC World Olive Oil Competition.

This recognition gives our family great pride and validates all the long hours and determination involved with consistently producing an award-winning olive oil!

Peter Liokareas, owner

In the 2019/20 season, the Kalamata-based company produced 100 tons of extra virgin olive oil using traditional methods.

"We are extremely honored to win at NYIOOC in back-to-back years," owner Peter Liokareas said. "To win in an 'off year' and an 'on year,' combined with the difficulties of combating climate conditions, is an amazing achievement for us."

"This recognition gives our family great pride and validates all the long hours and determination involved with consistently producing an award-winning olive oil," he added.

Liokareus added that while the climatic conditions on the southern end of the Peloponnese peninsula were particularly challenging this year, he will incorporate what he has learned dealing with the associated challenges into future harvests.

"This year, we saw a different climate from the year before," he said. "We harvested earlier, and found that our yields were low, but our quality was very high."

"Every year we strive to learn something new and make sure that we continue to get better at what we do," Liokareus added.

The NYIOOC World Olive Oil Competition, held each spring in New York, is the world's largest and most prestigious olive oil contest and its annual listing of award winners is considered the authoritative guide to the year’s best extra virgin olive oils.
