Georgia’s Five Otters Wins Gold Award
Five Otters from the United States has won a Gold Award at the 2022 NYIOOC World Olive Oil Competition, the world's most prestigious olive oil quality contest.
Winning this award is such a wonderful feeling and I'm very appreciative of all who helped make Five Otters what it is today.
Sharon Flanagan, Owner
Located in the southeastern state of Georgia, the company earned its first NYIOOC award for a medium field blend of Koroneiki, Arbequina and Arbosana olives.
"Growing olives is new to this region in Georgia and my hope is this achievement encourages more growers in the area," Sharon Flanagan, the owner of Five Otters, said after being notified of the award.
It's never easy to produce a world-class extra virgin olive oil, and that held true in the southeastern U.S. this season.
"Heavy rains impacted picking schedule," Flanagan said. "Limited availability of the mill impacted the timeframe for picking. We ended up having three separate harvests and three separate millings to complete the job."
"I look forward to sharing this award in our rural community where it will be most appreciated," Flanagan added.
The NYIOOC World Olive Oil Competition, held each spring in New York, is the world's largest and most prestigious olive oil contest. Its annual listing of award winners is considered the authoritative guide to the year’s best extra virgin olive oils.
