Situated in the small village of Gabela in South Herzegovina, Dante Olive Oil won its debut NYIOOC award for a medium-intensity blend.
"Herzegovina is a very young olive-growing region," owner Marko Krvavac said. "As young olive growers, our vision is to produce only quality olive oil."
"We have won several gold medals at regional competitions in recent years," he added. "This year, we sent oil to the NYIOOC for the first time. Winning a Gold Award at such a prestigious competition is a special feeling for us."
The company produces olive oil from 500 Frantoio, Leccino, Oblica, Pendolino, Levantinka, Lastovka, Drobnica, Cipressino, Istria Buza and Istrian Bjelica olive trees using traditional methods.
"This year's harvest was very challenging," Krvavac said. "The summer was very dry in Herzegovina, but we managed to keep our trees in very good condition. In the end, the fruits were of high quality and we managed to produce high quality oil."
