The first written accounts of olive cultivation can be found in the Roman travel writer Strabo's records from the first century BC. On the island of Brač, a unique production system for olive and sheep breeding has been developed. The challenging and rocky terrain on which the olive groves are located does not allow mechanized tillage. Today, about a million olive trees grow on Brač, making it the largest olive growing area in Croatia.
