California’s Showa Farm Awarded at World Olive Oil Competition

Showa Farm from United States has won a Silver Award at the 2020 NYIOOC World Olive Oil Competition, the world's most prestigious olive oil quality contest.

The California company, which employs traditional methods to produce its organic oil, won a Silver Award for its delicate organic Arbequina.

The win comes despite area wildfires that cut off power to the mill for two weeks mid-season, company owner Geoffrey Peters remarked after learning of the award.

"We harvested just before and just after the fires but would have preferred not to wait so that the olives would be greener," Peters said.

The win makes the second year running for the company, which has 800 trees on its farm.

"We love the NYIOCC. We appreciate our brand and love the flavor but it is really important to get the feedback of experts," Peters said.

The NYIOOC World Olive Oil Competition, held each spring in New York, is the world's largest and most prestigious olive oil contest and its annual listing of award winners is considered the authoritative guide to the year’s best extra virgin olive oils.
