Catalonia’s Priordei Celebrates NYIOOC Awards

8 months agoBy OOT Staff

Priordei from Spain has won two awards at the 2024 NYIOOC World Olive Oil Competition, the world's most prestigious olive oil quality contest.

As a family of producers from a small and remote territory, but with the capacity and the will to do great things, having a recognition like the NYIOOC helps us achieve greater international recognition.

Jordi Ciuraneta Riu, owner

The Catalan producer earned a Gold Award for its medium-intensity Priordei 1789 Rojal, which previously won a Silver Award in 2023. The company also earned a Silver Award for its medium Priordei 1789 Arbequina.

"As a family of producers from a small and remote territory, but with the capacity and the will to do great things, having a recognition like the NYIOOC helps us achieve greater international recognition," said owner Jordi Ciuraneta Riu.

"It is a very gratifying feeling since all the efforts, work and dreams of our family are recognized," he added.

Like many producers in Catalonia, Ciuraneta Riu said Priordei overcame a poor harvest and inflation to produce its award-winning extra virgin olive oil.

"Climate change and extreme drought have reduced the production by 50 percent, which also meant an increase in costs," Ciuranera Riu said.

"But, like our olive trees, we are very resilient in the face of adversity," he added. "We always work on the path of excellence, and just as our ancestors taught us, we always think that next year will be better."

The NYIOOC World Olive Oil Competition is the world's preeminent olive oil quality contest. Its annual list of award winners is the authoritative guide to the world's best olive oils and the dedicated producers who craft them.
