Grupa Nida Enjoys Golden End to Fruitful Harvest
Grupa Nida from Croatia earned a Gold Award at the 2023 NYIOOC World Olive Oil Competition, the world's largest olive oil quality contest.
The Dalmatian producer earned its first-ever NYIOOC accolade for its Grgur brand, an organic medium Oblica. "It feels amazing to win Gold after submitting for the first time," chief executive Nikola Sutalo said.
In the 2022/23 crop year, Grupa Nida produced 4,300 liters of extra virgin olive oil using traditional methods.
Sutalo said the company enjoyed a fruitful year not plagued by windy weather in the spring or pests during the fruit development or harvest.
"Our main challenge is the wind from Velebit, which sometimes covers the trees in salt," he said. "This year was good because there was no disease and we had few windy days."
"One of the biggest challenges is being in organic production," Sutalo added. "After many years, we have enjoyed a good year."
The NYIOOC World Olive Oil Competition held each spring in New York, is the world's most prestigious olive oil contest. Its annual listing of award winners is considered the authoritative guide to the year’s best extra virgin olive oils.
