Manuel da Silva Torrado Among Big Winners at NYIOOC

The Silver Award for the Portuguese producer's Saloio, a medium blend, was all the more impressive because the company had to grapple with falling prices during the season, Marketing Manager Adriano Marques said when he learned of the award.

The major problem for us in this harvest was the low price of olive oil. Some traditional olive fields with hand picking have become unprofitable. The current price is not fair for the product, and especially not fair for the producers.

The company produces extra virgin olive oil in Norte Alentejano, Portugal, using machine methods.

Marques noted that the company has recently focused on producing more fruity, complex and balanced olive oils.

"This is the future of the sector and especially is the type of olive oil that the consumer has to value," Marques said. "And in this respect, NYIOOC has played a very important role, and it means a lot to be highlighted in a competition with this prestige."

The NYIOOC World Olive Oil Competition, held each spring in New York, is the world's largest and most prestigious olive oil contest and its annual listing of award winners is considered the authoritative guide to the year’s best extra virgin olive oils.
