Fazenda Sabiá da Vigia Wins Second-Straight NYIOOC Gold

3 years agoBy OOT Staff

Brazilian producer Fazenda Sabiá da Vigia has won a Gold Award at the 2022 NYIOOC World Olive Oil Competition, the world's most prestigious olive oil quality contest.

The company, which grows olives in Rio Grande do Sol and the Serra da Mantiqueira, earned its second-consecutive Gold Award for its Azeite Sabiá brand, a medium blend.

Upon receiving the award, co-owner Beatriz Pereira said she was "very happy and proud of our team."

In the 2021/22 crop year, the company produced 10,000 liters of extra virgin olive oil using Arbequina, Arbosana, Koroneiki, Coratina and Frantoio olives on 110 hectares.

Pereira said that growing and harvesting olives in two different parts of Brazil was a consistent challenge, which makes the awards even more meaningful.

"It's really a big challenge," she said. "We harvest early and faced rain in Mantiqueira at one of our farms." Meanwhile, the climate was very dry in southern Brazil.

"In both places, there were high temperatures," Pereira said. "We have a refrigerator truck and we use to leave the olives in the field before taking them to the mill."

The NYIOOC World Olive Oil Competition, held each spring in New York, is the world's largest and most prestigious olive oil contest. Its annual listing of award winners is considered the authoritative guide to the year’s best extra virgin olive oils.
